Mature Egg with Cumulus 01

Photomicrograph (microscopic view) at a lower (microscopic) power of a human oocyte (egg) that is surrounded by a mass of (granulosa) cells (called the "cumulus oophorus"), seen following egg retrieval for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This cumulus is expanded into a starburst like pattern (called a "corona radiata"), making identification of the egg easier for the embryologist, and usually signifying the presence of a mature egg.
