This radiograph (of an MRI) demonstrates a pituitary microadenoma (dark discoloration within the pituitary gland at the tip of the line drawn by a radiologist) on saggital view that is entirely contained within the bony sella turcica.
Pituitary microadenomas are thought to occur within up to 25% of the general population with (roughly) 40-50% of these tumors secreting prolactin hormone. A relatively strong correlation between serum (blood) prolactin concentration and the size of a pituitary (prolactin secreting) tumor has been reported, although a high serum prolactin concentration may also be associated with smaller tumors displaying lateral displacement (invasion) into the cavernous sinuses
